Two Ballito classic cars join Nuts and Bolts 6 500km cross-country rally

Vintage charm rolls into town.

Ballito was treated to a rare sight at the weekend when a convoy of classic cars rolled into town.

Participants in the annual Ten4 Nuts and Bolts Rally travel over 6 500km, meandering through the country from Cape Town to Sodwana Bay and back to Cape Agulhas. The Ballito pitstop brought them to Taso’s Bar & Grill on Saturday to recharge their batteries over lunch before the next leg of the journey.

The rally, featuring 18 golden oldie cars, all older than 30 years, is a charity fundraising initiative. Funds are earmarked for four charity organisations – the CHOC Childhood Cancer Foundation, United Cerebral Palsy Foundation, the SMILE Foundation, which supports children with facial abnormalities, and the Bear Foundation which addresses mental health issues. Two Ballito teams joined the rally this year – The Undertakers with Jaco and Esmie Enslin and The Bloujob squad, represented by Danie and Zelda van Rensburg.

Founder and CEO of the Nuts & Bolts Rally, Pieter Andersen, said the goal was to raise R250 000 for each charity. “We have been touched by the kindness of South Africans throughout our journey. We have had a few breakdowns, but people stopped to help without expecting anything in return, which has been incredible,” said Andersen.

One of the stars of the convoy is a 53-year-old VW Beetle, affectionately called Crazy Bug, that continues to turn heads as it journeys across the country. The rally is more than just a road trip, it’s a celebration of community, charity and the timeless charm of vintage cars.

The Ballito teams said they plan to drive all the way to the final destination in Cape Agulhas on October 26.

“We’ve been part of the rally for few years now and always drive down to Cape Town to join. We enjoy these trips and it all for a good cause,” said Jaco.
