The cost of the looting, and the burning of buildings and cars in Isithebe will be high.

Protestors wreak havoc in Isithebe since early this morning.

Protest activity has quietened down while all await the arrival of the Mandeni mayor cllr Siphesihle Zulu according to Courier journalist, Jacquelin Herbst in Isithebe.

Herbst said public order policing fired rubber bullets at the protesters to try and bring order.

“The damage to local businesses is severe due to the vandalising and burning of premises and vehicles”, she said.

The community apparently took to the streets in opposition to the former mayor, cllr B L Magwaza, who is contesting the upcoming elections, according to a police report given to journalists.
However Herbst said exact cause of the protect remains unclear.
Fifty people, between the ages of 25 and 35, have been taken to the police station, but no cases have been registered yet.
The violent protest started at about 1am this morning when a large mob blocked roads with burning objects and stoned buildings in Isithebe.
