Zodwa Wabantu dragged into debate on Gugu Ncube’s public indecency charges

South Africans were outraged after Gugu Ncube was charged with public indecency following her naked protest at the Union Buildings. Ncube, the daughter of prominent Zimbabwean politician Welshman Ncube, was arrested outside the Union Buildings in Pretoria on Wednesday after she had staged a nude protest calling on President Cyril Ramaphosa to hear her out on the sexual harassment she suffered allegedly at the hands of one of her colleagues.

She had said she was protesting naked because “nudity is a sign of my dignity that I have been stripped of”.

“I have tried sending the president emails, everybody around the president. They keep on not taking my message to the president. Dear United Nations, please intervene. I’m a victim of sexual harassment at Unisa. They claim I have resigned, I never resigned. They chased me away from work,” she said.

The public indecency charges against her sparked a debate on whether the police were right in arresting her, with entertainer Zodwa Wabantu’s name being dragged into the debate as a result.

The entertainer has openly spoken up on her dislike for underwear and has appeared in many social events in outfits that left nothing to the imagination.

Zodwa Wabantu came out in support of Ncube, and said there was “no better way” to fight for her rights than the naked protest.

She told Daily Sun: “The person implicated is walking free. What is happening in this country? I want us to be naked together. Women will continue being abused and harassed if we keep quiet and don’t support one another.”

While some have called on the South African Police Service to arrest Zodwa Wabantu, others said it was not right to drag the entertainer into a case that had nothing to do with her. In fact, Zodwa Wabantu did not go to the Union Buildings naked, they argued.
