Liz Swaney has become a hit at the Winter Olympics for a strange reason: she did no tricks whatsoever during her run in the half pipe skiing event!
Indeed, the 33-year-old skier, who’s an American but competes for Hungary, divided opinion with a pretty shocking performance.
Some felt she was simply an embarrassment though others believe she’s an inspiration for mediocre athletes everywhere.
Either way, it’s pretty clear that she has little to no skills as a skier.
How did she exactly qualify for the Winter Olympics then?
It’s a complex answer but essentially she milked a system with many loopholes.
Swaney would ensure she’d finish in the top 30 of qualifying events, which is usually the cutoff for Olympic qualification, but in many cases there would be only 25-28 competitors in the field.
Officials wouldn’t bother to check then how many were competing.
The Hungarian skiing federation also as antiquated rules designed to balance representation between men and women.
