Volkswagen ready to rumble

Successful Polo Cup to run under the banner of Falken Tyres.


Volkswagen Motorsport will tackle the 2019 South African circuit racing season with six factory cars.

Heading up the team in the Global Touring Car title chase will be the Jetta GTC entries of Daniel Rowe and Keagan Masters.

Rowe won three GTC races in a Jetta last season, while Masters dominated the GTC2 championship in a Golf GTI.

Representing VW Motorsport in the GTC2 category will be Adriaan Wood and Bradley Liebenberg, both behind the wheel of Golf GTI entries.

Wood will run under the Kyocera banner, while Liebenberg will sport the livery of Smartcall.

Perhaps even more important from a marketing point of view, the ultra-successful Polo Cup category will return bigger than ever this year, with six new drivers joining the 2019 series.

Polo Cup is by far the longest running and most successful racing formula in South Africa.

Over a period of more than two decades the series, which fields up to 30 drivers who compete in equal Volkswagen Polos, has provided race fans with some of the best and most memorable moments ever seen on local circuits.

More importantly, it also played a major role in the careers of various successful racing drivers from our shores.

This year, the Polo Cup series will run under the banner of Falken Tyres, on whose slick racing rubberware the drivers will compete.

Representing VW Motorsport in the championship will be works drivers Jonathan Mogotsi and Raais Asmal.

Current South African champion Jeffrey Kruger will defend GTC, TOO.

Adriaan Wood and Bradley Liebenberg will take on the GTC2 field in factory GTI models. his title, again under the banner of Universal Healthcare.

Both Volkswagen’s factory teams in the Falken Polo Cup and GTC series will be in action during Round One of the 2019 Extreme Festival at the Dezzi Raceway on the South Coast of KZN over the weekend of March 2.
