Uproar over wrongful arrest at Shoprite Usave in Cosmo City

A site visit was also conducted at Shoprite Usave, where the MEC had to address the media in full view of the public and police.


An alleged wrongful arrest of a woman in Cosmo City, north of Johannesburg, who was manhandled by security in front of her young daughter at a supermarket has caused an uproar on social media, Roodepoort Northsider reports.

A video of the incident was shared on Sunday, showing the woman being handcuffed by the store’s security guards while her daughter cries.

It is reported the woman was being punished after her three-year-old daughter messed herself outside the store.

The matter was brought to the attention of police and Gauteng Community Safety Office for intervention.

Honeydew police spokesperson Captain Balan Muthan said:” The incident happened at Shoprite U Save, situated in Extension 8.”

Muthan confirmed that the woman was handcuffed by security “when the little girl wanted to release herself.”

Muthan also mentions that the MEC for Gauteng Community Safety Sizkele Nkosi-Malobane together with her spokesperson Busaphi Nxumalo paid a visit to the Cosmo Satellite Station, and met with the victim and Honeydew station commander Brigadier Anesh Maharaj.
