Tshwane delivers on promise of tarred roads

The City of Tshwane says it is happy it managed to deliver 12km of tarred roads to communities for this current financial year to date.

This is only 1% short of what Tshwane mayor Solly Msimanga promised in his last budget speech.

Tshwane mayoral spokesperson Samkelo Mgobozi said the city has set aside R497 million for roads for the 2016-17 financial year to provide 13km of tarred roads to communities who have never before had them.

He said the city recently completed 8.2km of roads in Ga-Rankuwa Unit 9, north of Pretoria, and is in the process of completing a further 9km of road in Soshanguve and Ga-Rankwa Unit 1.

“A further 20km is in planning for the current financial year. They will be completed in the 2018-19 financial year,” Mgobozi said.

The city has completed 133km of roads since 2014 – 52km was completed in 2014-15, 37km in 2015-16, and 32km in 2016-17.

While the city has made great progress in this regard, they do not know the current conditions of the roads as the last recorded statistics go back to 2014-15.

According to these statistics, 32% of the city’s roads were in a very good condition, 40% were in a good condition and 19% were in a fair condition.

A total of 8% of these roads were reported to have been in a poor condition and 1% in a very poor condition.

Mgobozi said the city uses the Pavement Management System to determine the condition of its roads.

This includes capturing the overall condition, potholes and length of the roads.

“From this information the city prioritises which roads to maintain first,” Mgobozi said.

Mgobozi added that they are also planning for the link, which is an extension of Derdepoort Road, north east of Pretoria.

“The project is included in a list of long-term key projects, and this is still on the agenda,” Mgobozi said.
