US tariffs: Agoa is dead, now for plan B
On Thursday morning, US President Donald Trump effectively ended Agoa, the Africa Growth and Opportunity Act, after imposing a 30% duty on all goods imported from South Africa.
While new trade tariffs were imposed globally, it marks the latest in a raft of punitive missives against South Africa.
Economist Dawie Roodt said that the tariffs may only make a small dent of between 0.2% and 0.6% in gross domestic product.

Father handed two life terms for rape and murder of 8-day-old daughter
A 37-year-old father from Carletonville has been sentenced to two life terms for the rape and murder of his eight-day-old baby daughter.
Hugo Ferreira appeared in the Pretoria High Court, where the sentence was handed down.

Ramaphosa in the clear as Public Protector finds he did not abuse office for ANC activities
President Cyril Ramaphosa has been cleared of allegations that he used his position in government to advance the interests of the ANC.
Public Protector Kholeka Gcaleka released a series of investigative reports on Friday, including two that dealt with complaints about Ramaphosa’s alleged abuse of power and improper conduct in relation to ANC.
Both reports examined claims that the president used his office for party-political purposes.

George building collapse: Minister details investigation findings
Last year’s building collapse in George that killed 34 people could have been prevented if established procedures had been followed.
Minster of Human Settlements Thembisile Simelane-Nkadimeng presented an overview of a report on the collapse to her department’s portfolio committee on Friday.
The report was concluded earlier this year and submitted to the department of human settlements (DHS) on 26 March.

Stormers say Damian Willemse is going nowhere until after 2027
Damian Willemse is not going anywhere.
That was the emphatic response from the Stormers late Friday following news last weekend that the two-time World Cup winner might be on his way to Leinster in Ireland as a replacement for the departing Jordie Barrett.
The New Zealander Barrett is currently on a six-month playing sabbatical in Ireland, but will return to his home country in the middle of this year.
