Free State asbestos trial: Sodi challenges state capture evidence as Magashule complains about witness list

Former ANC secretary-general Ace Magashule and his co-accused have pleaded not guilty in the R255 million Free State asbestos corruption trial.

The trial resumed for its second day at the Free State High Court in Bloemfontein on Wednesday, with Magashule, his former personal assistant Moroadi Cholota, and businessman Edwin Sodi back in the dock.

The trio is part of a group of 18 accused individuals, which includes former senior government officials and businesspeople.

‘Blatantly xenophobic’: Charlotte Maxeke hospital sued for refusing to save Zimbabwean girl’s life

Fifteen-year-old Vanessa Mafu, the daughter of Zimbabwean parents, suffers from a life-threatening autoimmune disease that requires a liver transplant.

But doctors at Charlotte Maxeke Johannesburg Academic Hospital have told her she does not qualify for a transplant from a South African donor.

Meanwhile, her life is slowly ebbing away at the hospital. Her mother, Vuyelwa Ncube, was told by a doctor that she must have a valid visa or permit before her daughter receives life-saving medical treatment.

Macpherson accused of being ‘weak’ after saying he’s being sidelined over Parliament fire

Build One South Africa (BOSA) has accused the Minister of Public Works and Infrastructure Dean Macpherson of being “weak” and allowing himself to be bullied.

This comes after Macpherson said he is not receiving regular updates from the Development Bank of South Africa (DBSA) on the restoration process of the damaged parliament precinct in Cape Town.

There was an agreement that DBSA would provide biweekly reports to the speaker of parliament, the secretary to parliament and Macpherson. This was to ensure transparency, urgency and accountability.

American missionary kidnapped in Gqeberha rescued, three suspects dead

A 34-year-old American missionary who was kidnapped in the Eastern Cape has been rescued in a dramatic operation, with three suspects killed in a shootout with police.

A multi-disciplinary law enforcement operation led by the Directorate for Priority Crime Investigation, also known as the Hawks, rescued Josh Sullivan on Tuesday and reunited him with his family.

Eastern Cape Hawks spokesperson Lieutenant General Avele Fumba said Sullivan was held at a safe house in KwaMagxaki, Gqeberha.
