The hunt is on as escaped Karoo lion’s spoor found

Park rangers in choppers are on their way to the farm Haw & Miszewski Taaiboschfontein to try to dart and catch the lion.

The lion that escaped from the Karoo National Park last Friday and seemed to have disappeared without trace, has been found.

The fresh spoor of the lion was spotted this afternoon on the farm Haw & Miszewski Taaiboschfontein, 70km from Beaufort West, said one of the owners, Alex Miszewski.

Park rangers in choppers were on their way to the farm to try to dart and catch the lion, assumed to be a two-and-a-half-year-old male.

The lion has been giving trackers and rangers the runaround since his escape, until his spoor was lost in rocky terrain to the north of the park on Tuesday.

According to a statement by South African National Parks (SANParks), the police stock theft unit from Beaufort West assisted in the search on Tuesday.

“The teams searched on top of the mountains in an area called the Kleinboere, towards the north-east of the park. The section of the Kleinboere area that the teams could not cover yesterday will be searched today, and also north of that. This is between 15 and 20 kilometres from the park’s boundary,” Van der Walt said.
