Following his departure from SuperSport United to Orlando Pirates in 2007, Matsatsantsa bagged three Premiership titles in succession.
The “curse” became more evident to local fans when Pirates won the title in 2011 after Modise moved to Mamelodi Sundowns.
But this has all come to an end.
Modise has been a vital cog in the the team that clinched the Premiership title on Tuesday evening, after a 3-0 thumping of his former club United at Loftus Versfeld.
“The General” scored a cracker of a goal – a possible contender for a goal of the season – to help Downs to their sixth Premiership title.
“Me winning this title will change the rest of my life,” said Modise, “It will help me set new goals as well.
“But this has been a great season not only for me, but the rest of the club, the management and everyone involved. I must say that it is a great feeling winning the title after waiting so long.”
Modise, the 2008 and 2009 Player-of-the-Year, has also been punted as this season’s Player-of-the-Season, though he has also been accused of being inconsistent, like many others in the top tier.
He singled out coach Pitso Mosimane for his unwavering support throughout his turbulent football career, starting when they were both at SuperSport to being reunited at Downs.
The midfield maestro had only bagged the Telkom Charity Cup medals in 2008 and 2009 prior to this league medal.
“Coach Pitso has done a lot for me,” said Modise, “and I would really like to thank him for the support and motivation. He is key to us winning the title this season and for me especially for my first league medal.
“But credit must also go to the rest of the team, I think the guys have been fighting very hard for this,” he added.
