One of the three hijackers who robbed a couple in Pinetown, KwaZulu-Natal, has been arrested.
Pinetown police spokesperson Captain Bongumusa Manqele said it was alleged the 34-year-old victim and his fiancée were offloading groceries from their car on Beviss Road in Pinetown when they were accosted by three armed men on Thursday, Highway Mail reported.
“The men demanded car keys from the victims at gunpoint,” said Manqele.
The victims were also robbed of cellphones and cash before the suspects drove off in a white VW Polo that belonged to the couple.
A case of hijacking was opened at Pinetown Police Station for investigation.
Manqele said the hijacked car was spotted by police in Umlazi, and a car chase ensued.
“The hijackers crashed the car into a house at P section Umlazi, and one suspect was arrested. A Norinco pistol with seven rounds of ammunition was also recovered from the suspect.
“The firearm will be sent for ballistics tests to determine whether it was used in the commission of other crimes in the province,” added Manqele.
The suspect will be charged for carjacking and possession of unlicensed firearm and ammunition and is expected to appear in the Pinetown Magistrates’ Court soon.
