In support of the UN’s World Youth Skills Day on July 15, Surf washing powder hosted a free career confidence workshop in Soweto. The workshop was based on their Surf School of Shine online platform.
The workshop hosted over 400 young, unemployed people to share integral tips and practical skills to prepare them for work readiness.
World Youth Skills Day highlights that the youth are three times more likely to be unemployed than adults, and in South Africa, with an unemployment rate of over 27%, this issue is especially relevant.
UNESCO said that unemployment on a global scale is high is because of a “mismatch between the skills young workers can offer and the skills which are in demand.”
Surf, in collaboration with its partners, seeks to bridge this gap by providing youths with the soft skills they need to help them ‘bring out their bright’ in pursuit of their careers.
The workshop was hosted at the Diepkloof multi-purpose hall, and included a host of key note addresses by career coaches and experts. Topics discussed included career planning, finding the right job, interview skills, personal branding, and financial planning and budgeting – all of which are available as free courses on Surf’s School of Shine online platform.
