Zuma not delaying SABC board appointment, ‘he is just being diligent’

In a media statement released on Thursday, President Jacob Zuma’s spokesperson Dr Bongani Ngqulunga said “President Jacob Zuma has received the recommended names of persons to serve on the SABC Board”.

Ngqulunga advised that “he [Zuma] now has to satisfy himself that they are fit and proper persons to serve on the board, and that they possess all the qualifications they claim to have”.

The Presidency justified this extraordinary step, which has led to a situation where – due to the lack of a board of directors – the SABC’s executive management is reporting directly to the minister of communications, Ayanda Dlodlo. The presidency said it was necessary to go through the candidates’ profiles with a fine-tooth comb.

“It should be recalled that we have had instances in the past in which there were misrepresentations about qualifications and other matters.

“The Presidency, working together with the Department of Communications, is undertaking checks, verifying qualifications, security clearance and citizenship, among others – before the appointments were (sic) made.”

Ngqulunga emphasised that Zuma is “aware that the SABC currently does not have a board and is therefore treating the matter with the urgency it deserves”.
