Zuma defends cabinet reshuffle, speaks on economy but leaves out downgrade

South Africa would reach out to assure the international community that its economy was stable, president Jacob Zuma said at a Transnet launch.

Speaking at the launch of a new locally manufactured locomotive at Transnet, Zuma has defended his Cabinet reshuffle, telling the media that young leaders were needed in government.

Zuma was referring to his decision to appoint Malusi Gigaba to head the finance portfolio and Hlengiwe Mkhize to become the new minister of home affairs, among the other key appointments he made in the Cabinet reshuffle.

“We thank Gordhan for ensuring a smooth transition. Mr Gordhan officially handed over to Gigaba on Tuesday morning,” Zuma said.

“We are proud of having added many young ministers, which is an investment in the future. If we don’t enable young MPs to gain experience now‚ we may battle with experience at a later stage in the national executive,” he said.

Zuma also spoke out about the economy and the impact that axing Pravin Gordhan and his deputy, Mcebisi Jonas, has had on the markets.

“We must work hard to promote economic trade among African countries and boost economic development.”
