Democratic Alliance (DA) leader Mmusi Maimane has likened Zimbabwe’s ruling Zanu-PF party to Africa’s oldest liberation movement, African National Congress (ANC), saying Robert Mugabe’s downfall this week was a signal of the ANC’s own decline.
Speaking at Daily Maverick’s The Gathering on Thursday, in Sandton, Johannesburg, Maimane said Zanu-PF and the ANC were in “the same WhatsApp group” – in other words, two peas in a pod.
“In truth, the story of Mugabe’s Zanu-PF is precisely the same story of Zuma’s ANC. It’s an indicator of the fact that liberation movements often run their course,” Maimane said according to a Daily Maverick report.
“I’d like to argue that Zanu-PF and the ANC – as the young people would say – same WhatsApp group.”
He said liberation movements like Zanu-PF and the ANC had a limited lifespan as they adopted the very values they had fought against.
