Zethembe Khoza resigns as Eskom chairperson

Eskom chairperson Zethembe Khoza has submitted his resignation to the minister of public enterprises Lynne Brown. He added that he is expecting Brown to “accept his decision.”

“I think it’s in [the] good interest of the country…after all the noise, it’s better for me,” Khoza told Fin24 today.

Finance minister Malusi Gigaba told the media this week that the situation at state owned enterprises (SOE) was worrisome and required urgent intervention. But Khoza said he didn’t quit due to pressure exerted by Gigaba.

“I was putting out fires on daily basis, so I think it’s good to give new people a chance,” Khoza said.

There was speculation this morning that during the ANC’s national executive committee meeting which concluded in Irene last night, ANC heavyweights instructed a clean-up of Eskom urgently as its failure will affect the economy.

Nhlanhla Nene, who was unceremoniously removed as finance minister at the behest of the Guptas by Zuma as finance minister as exposed in leaked Gupta emails, has been touted as a potential boss of the beleaguered Megawatt Park-based power utility.
