Woman attacked by suspended ANC official given a house
An image of the 55-year-old being kicked during a protest went viral last month.
A viral video of an elderly lady, beaten down in the streets of Johannesburg by an ANC supporter on the 5 February 2018 sparked outrage on social media. She has since received a house.
Olivia Mokete has been gifted with a wendy house by a woman who was touched by her story.
Dianne Bayley, of Bryanston, Johannesburg, approached crowdfunding organisation Backabuddy, which raised more than R10 000, and this was used to build a wendy house for Mokete and her family.
“I saw the video footage on Twitter and was appalled that the huge man could beat a woman – and a very small woman at that – in the street while other men and policemen looked on,” said Brawley.
“When I saw the picture of her standing outside her tin shack in Orange Farm, my heart broke. Not only had Olivia experienced a terrible order and was in pain, she went home to a shack that doesn’t even have a bed in it. She had several pieces of corrugated iron cobbled together to form a shelter. No actual door; no window; no floor. I couldn’t stand up in it.”
The new house has a built-in cupboard, counter and storage unit. Mokete received it on February 24.
