Here’s where to get your Covid-19 vaccine in Gauteng today

More than 13 million vaccines have been administered in South Africa as of Saturday. The health department urges those eligible to visit any of the 48 public vaccination sites this weekend.

Don’t forget to take your ID or driver licence, or a police-signed affidavit confirming your identity. You don’t need to register; personnel will capture your details on the EVDS at the site.

Alternatively, register on the official South African Covid-19 Vaccination Programme registration portal, but remember to take your ID to the vaccination site.

Covid-19 update in SA

As of Saturday, 4 September, the cumulative number of detected Covid-19 cases in South Africa is 2,814,014 with 8,411 new cases identified, the National Institute for Communicable Diseases (NICD) confirmed.

Moreover, 182 more Covid-19 related deaths were reported, bringing the total number of deaths to 83,343. The total number of recoveries now stands at 2,586,646 with a recovery rate of 91,9%.

A further 255 hospital admissions were reported in the past 24 hours, while the total number of vaccines administered in the country so far stands at 13,430,600.

Peak in Covid-19 infections among teenagers

The NICD noted an additional peak in individuals aged 15 to 19.

In addition, the latest data set shows that the testing rate “was slightly higher among females (577 per 100,000 persons) than males (503 per 100,000 persons)”.

“Overall, the percentage testing positive was highest in individuals aged 15-19 years (24.9%), and in this same age group in males (25.3%) and females (24.7%)”, the NICD said.

Sahpra takes stand against Ivermectin

The South African Health Products Regulatory Authority (Sahpra) joined the United States Food and Drug Administration (FDA) to caution against the use of Ivermectin to treat Covid-19.

According to Sahpra, its position to align itself with the FDA is reflected in the statement issued in January this year, outlining its views on the drug and the Controlled Compassionate Use Programme.

“Sahpra echoes the FDA’s stance that Ivermectin does not have proven antiviral properties against SARS-COV-2, but it is currently used to treat parasitic conditions in animals.
