Weather service warns of heavy rain and thunderstorms in parts of SA

The South African Weather Service (SAWS) has issued an alert for severe thunderstorms in the central and north-eastern parts of Northern Cape and extreme western parts of Free State on Sunday.

It also said disruptive rain is expected in the eastern half of the Eastern Cape and the extreme south of KwaZulu-Natal. It said this will likely result in localised flooding and damage to property.

In addition, SAWS said extremely high fire danger conditions are expected over the Matzikama and Cederberg municipalities of the Western Cape.

Sticking in the Western Cape, a heatwave will be felt in Saldanha Bay, Swartland and parts of the City of Cape Town. Hot conditions are also expected over the interior of Namakwa of the Northern Cape, Cape Town and the Cape Winelands District Municipality.

Here’s what to expect in your province on Sunday, 6 April:

Gauteng:

Morning fog patches in places, otherwise cloudy and cool with isolated showers and thundershowers

Mpumalanga:

Morning fog on the highveld and escarpment, otherwise cloudy and cool to warm with isolated showers and thundershowers.

Limpopo:

Cloudy and cool to warm with isolated showers and thundershowers over the central and southern parts.

North West:

Cloudy and cool with isolated to scattered showers and thundershowers, but widespread in the extreme west.

Free State:

Morning fog in the east, otherwise cloudy and cool with isolated showers and thundershowers, but scattered in the extreme west.

Northern Cape:

Morning fog along the coast, otherwise partly cloudy and warm with isolated showers and thundershowers but cloudy and cool with scattered to widespread in the north-east.

The wind along the coast will be light easterly.

Western Cape:

Morning fog along the west and south coast, otherwise fine and warm to hot becoming partly cloudy from the afternoon with isolated thundershowers in the north-east. It will be extremely hot along the west coast.

The wind along the coast will be moderate to fresh east to south-easterly.

Eastern Cape (western half):

Partly cloudy and cool to warm with isolated showers and rain in the extreme east and north-east.

The wind along the coast will be fresh to strong north-easterly

Eastern Cape (eastern half):

Cloudy and cool with isolated showers and rain but scattered to widespread along the coast and adjacent interior.

The wind along the coast will be moderate to fresh south-easterly.

KwaZulu-Natal:

Morning fog in places over the interior, otherwise partly cloudy and cool to warm isolated showers and thundershowers but scattered in the extreme south.

The wind along the coast will be moderate to fresh northerly to north-easterly.
