Rain expected in Western Cape as cold front makes landfall

A yellow level 2 warning for damaging wind and waves has been issued along the coast between Margate and Richards Bay on Friday morning.


A cold front has made landfall west of the country on Thursday, where isolated to widespread showers and rain are expected, the South African Weather Service (SAWS) has warned.

“Isolated to scattered showers and rain over parts of the Western Cape and the south coast of the Eastern Cape and adjacent interior as cold fronts pass over.”

Isolated showers and thundershowers are also expected over the western interior of the country on Thursday evening.

On Friday, the weather service expects isolated showers and rain along the southern and eastern coastlines of the country and adjacent interior.

A yellow level 2 warning for damaging wind and waves has been issued along the coast between Margate and Richards Bay on Friday morning.

This will result in difficulty in navigation at sea as well as localised disruption to small harbours and ports.

Friday’s weather forecast

Gauteng: Partly cloudy and warm. The expected UVB sunburn index: high.

Mpumalanga: Fine and cool to warm, becoming partly cloudy but cloudy with evening fog patches along the escarpment.

Limpopo: Fine and warm to hot, becoming partly cloudy.

North West: Partly cloudy and warm.

Free State: Partly cloudy and cool.

Northern Cape: Partly cloudy with morning fog patches over the southern interior and cold over the high-ground, otherwise fine and cool.

The wind along the coast will be moderate to fresh southerly to south-easterly.

Western Cape: Cloudy along the south coast with isolated morning showers, otherwise partly cloudy and cool to cold.

The wind along the coast will be light and variable along the south-west coast but moderate to fresh southerly to south-easterly along the west coast, otherwise moderate south-westerly. The expected UVB sunburn index: moderate.

Western half of the Eastern Cape: Partly cloudy and cool but cloudy with isolated light morning showers along the coast. The wind along the coast will be fresh to strong westerly to south-westerly, becoming moderate from the afternoon but light in the evening.

Eastern half of the Eastern Cape: Cloudy in the extreme east with light rain at first, otherwise fine and cool, becoming cloudy along the coast with isolated showers in the evening. The wind along the coast will be fresh to strong south-westerly, becoming moderate from the afternoon.

KwaZulu-Natal: Cloudy and cool with isolated showers along the coast. It will be cold in the extreme south-west. The wind along the coast will be moderate to fresh south-westerly but strong at first. The expected UVB sunburn index: low.
