Weather outlook for the HSBC Cape Town Sevens

The HSBC World Rugby Sevens Series returns in Cape Town from Friday to Sunday, as the teams battle for qualification for the Olympic Games Paris 2024.

The South African Weather Service (SAWS) has shared the weather outlook for the action-packed weekend in Cape Town.

According to the weather service, Friday will be dominated by a north to north-westerly wind contributing to a cooler maximum temperature (24°C) compared to Thursday.

“Even though partly cloudy conditions are expected, no precipitation is on the cards for the Mother City,” said the weather service.

From Saturday, the Cape doctor (fresh to strong south-easterly wind) will dominate with maximum wind speeds of 50 km/h, gusting 70 km/h expected during the afternoon.

It is going to be mostly cloudy with the morning temperature expected to be 18°C, but increasing to 25°C by midday.

Isolated showers are also expected from the evening when the black south-easter will start to dominate.

Mostly cloudy with isolated showers temperatures are expected towards the finals, with a minimum of 20°C and maximum of 27°C.

“Very isolated thundershowers are possible from the evening and, therefore, the public that will attend the event on Sunday is advised to keep a close eye on weather updates.”

Extremely uncomfortable conditions are expected over the interior of the Western Cape, as well as the interior of the Namakwa District of the Northern Cape on Friday.

Extremely hot conditions are expected in places over Sarah Baartman District Municipality, Nelson Mandela Bay Metro and Raymond Mhlaba Local Municipality of the Eastern Cape.

Gauteng: Cloudy at times and warm with scattered afternoon showers and thundershowers. The expected UVB sunburn index: Moderate.

Mpumalanga: Hot in places in the Lowveld, otherwise cloudy and warm with isolated showers and thundershowers but scattered in the south-west.

Limpopo: Cloudy and warm with isolated showers and thundershowers.

North West: Partly cloudy and warm with isolated showers and thundershowers in the west, otherwise scattered.

Free State: Partly cloudy and warm with isolated showers and thundershowers, but scattered in the east where it will become cloudy.

Northern Cape: Fine and warm to hot in the north. It will become partly cloudy with isolated evening showers and thundershowers, except along the coast and adjacent interior, where morning fog patches are expected. The wind along the coast will be moderate north-westerly becoming south-westerly by the afternoon.

Western Cape: Morning fog along the coastal regions, otherwise fine and warm becoming partly cloudy and hot to very hot over the eastern interior with isolated thundershowers but scattered over the extreme east. The wind along the coast will be fresh to strong north-westerly but south-westerly in the south. The expected UVB sunburn index: Extreme.

Western half of the Eastern Cape: Morning fog patches in places, otherwise fine and very hot to extremely hot but warm to hot along the coast. It will become cloudy with scattered showers and thundershowers in the afternoon.

The wind along the coast will be fresh to strong north-easterly, becoming south-westerly from the west in the afternoon.

Eastern half of the Eastern Cape: Morning fog patches in places south of the escarpment, otherwise fine and warm to hot. It will become cloudy with scattered showers and thundershowers in the afternoon, but isolated along the coast. The wind along the coast will be fresh to strong north-easterly.

KwaZulu-Natal: Morning fog over the interior, otherwise partly cloudy and warm becoming cloudy with isolated showers and thundershowers but scattered in the west. The wind along the coast will be moderate to fresh easterly to north-easterly. The expected UVB sunburn index: Moderate.
