Level 2 warning issued for severe thunderstorms, heavy rain in Limpopo

'The good falls could result in localised flooding, causing flooding and disruption to livelihood.'


The South African Weather Service (SAWS) has issued a yellow level 2 warning for severe thunderstorms with possible heavy downpours over western KwaZulu-Natal, escarpment of Mpumalanga and extreme south-eastern Limpopo as well as the eastern parts of Eastern Cape on Wednesday.

Residents in these areas should watch out for localised flooding of low-lying bridges, settlement and roads and damage to infrastructure.

Extremely high fire danger conditions are also expected over the northern Dawid Kruiper local municipality of the Northern Cape, warned the weather service.

Gauteng: Cloudy and cool to warm with scattered showers and thundershowers. The expected UVB sunburn index: High.

Mpumalanga: Hot in places over the Lowveld, otherwise cloudy and cool to warm with scattered showers and thundershowers.

Limpopo: Cloudy in the morning, otherwise partly cloudy and cool to warm with scattered showers and thundershowers.

North West: Partly cloudy in the west, otherwise cloudy and warm with scattered showers and thundershowers.

Free State: Partly cloudy in the west, otherwise cloudy and cool to warm with scattered showers and thundershowers.

Northern Cape: Morning fog along coast, otherwise partly cloudy and hot with isolated showers and thundershowers in the north-east, but very hot in places in the north. It will be fine over the central parts. The wind along the coast will light and variable until afternoon, otherwise moderate to fresh south-westerly.

Western Cape: Morning fog along the coast, otherwise partly cloudy and cool to warm, but hot in the north-east. The wind along the coast will be light and variable north of Cape Point until late afternoon, otherwise moderate to fresh westerly to south-westerly. The expected UVB sunburn index: Very High.

Western half of the Eastern Cape: Partly cloudy and warm with isolated rain and showers along the coast. The wind along the coast will be moderate to fresh westerly to south-westerly.

Eastern half of the Eastern Cape: Partly cloudy and warm with scattered showers and thundershowers, but isolated in the west. The wind along the coast will be moderate southerly to south-westerly, but moderate north-westerly north of Coffee Bay.

KwaZulu-Natal: Morning fog patches over the interior, otherwise cloudy and warm, but hot in places in the east. Scattered showers and thundershowers are expected but isolated in the east. The wind along the coast will be fresh to strong north-easterly The expected UVB sunburn index: Moderate.
