Weather: KZN on high alert for severe thunderstorms, flooding

The South African Weather Service (Saws) issued a yellow level 2 warning for thunderstorms and flooding expected in KwaZulu-Natal (KZN) this afternoon.

Residents are advised to remain vigilant and monitor the weather situation closely.

Some of these thunderstorms may become severe in the north-western regions, resulting in localised flooding and infrastructure damage due to damaging winds.

Saws said severe weather conditions may lead to localised flooding in low-lying settlements, bridges, and susceptible roads.

Infrastructure, settlements, and livestock are also at risk for damage.

In addition, falling trees may obstruct roads and create difficult driving conditions due to slippery roads and poor visibility

Driving during a storm

During severe thunderstorms, drivers may face reduced visibility due to heavy rain and potential flooding.

It is crucial to slow down and maintain a safe distance from other vehicles.

It’s advised to turn on headlines (even during the day) to enhance visibility during a storm. That said, avoid using high beams (brights) as it creates glare and reflection.

Additionally, make use of windshield wipers and defoggers to keep windows clear.

Flood safety

Avoid flooded roads at all costs since it takes only 30cm of water to move your car and even less to stall your vehicle or make you lose control.

Furthermore, 60cm of fast-moving water could float your car. If you come across a flooded road, turn around and seek an alternate route.

Also, ensure your vehicle is in good working condition before heading out; check if the lights, tyres and wipers are functioning.

And keeping an emergency kit in your car is always a good idea. Include a flashlight, first aid supplies, and a charged cell phone, if you have a spare.
