Weather alert: Wet conditions across the country and possible snowfall in KZN

The South African Weather Service (Saws) has released its latest weather forecast for Thursday, 24 April 2025.

The weather service warns of severe thunderstorms resulting in heavy downpours and possible flooding in parts of the Free State, North West, Gauteng, Mpumalanga, Limpopo and KwaZulu-Natal. Meanwhile very cold weather and possible snow are forecast over the south-western high grounds of KwaZulu-Natal. Here’s what you need to know.

Weather warnings, Thursday, 24 April

Impact-based warnings

The weather service has issued an orange level 5 warning for severe thunderstorms resulting in heavy downpours in the eastern parts of the Free State, extreme east of the North West, southern parts of Gauteng and extreme south-western parts of Mpumalanga. Flooding of roads and bridges, damage to infrastructure and agricultural activities are expected.

A yellow level 4 warning has been issued for severe thunderstorms resulting in heavy downpours leading to localised flooding of roads and bridges, large amounts of small hail and excessive lightning in the extreme south-central parts of Limpopo, northern parts of Gauteng and Mpumalanga highveld as well as over the northern and north-eastern parts of KwaZulu-Natal.

A yellow level 2 warning has been issued for severe thunderstorms leading to localised damage to settlements and localised flooding of susceptible roads, low-lying areas and bridges in the central part of Free State, eastern parts of North West, southern parts of Limpopo and north-eastern parts of Mpumalanga, except in the north-eastern Lowveld.

A yellow Level 1 warning has been issued for disruptive rain leading to localised flooding of settlements, roads and bridges in places along the coast and adjacent interior of the eastern half of the Eastern Cape.

Advisories

Cold and wet conditions are expected over the central and western parts of KwaZulu-Natal, but it’s expected to be very cold in the south-western high grounds where light snowfall is possible.

Provincial weather forecast

Here’s what to expect in your province on Thursday, 24 April:

Gauteng:

Residents of Gauteng can expect cloudy and cool weather condtions with widespread showers and thundershowers.

Mpumalanga:

Mpumalanga residents will experience cloudy and cool to cold weather with scattered to widespread showers and thundershowers, but isolated in the Lowveld where it will be warm.

Limpopo:

The day will be cloudy and cool with isolated to scattered showers and thundershowers, but widespread in the south-west. It will be warm in the Lowveld and Limpopo Valley.

North West:

Cloudy and cool weather awaits North West residents, with scattered showers and thundershowers but widespread over the extreme eastern parts.

Free State:

Residents of the Free State will experience cloudy and cool weather conditions with isolated to scattered showers and thundershowers but widespread over the eastern half. It will cold along the Lesotho border.

Northern Cape:

The day will start with morning and evening fog in places along coast, otherwise it will be partly cloudy and cool with isolated thundershowers over the eastern parts, but fine over the north-western parts.

Western Cape:

Western Cape residents can expect morning fog in places, otherwise it will be partly cloudy and cool. It will be warm over the western interior.

The region’s expected UVB sunburn index is “high”.

Residents should take the necessary precautions against prolonged sun exposure.

Eastern Cape (western half):

Cloudy and cool weather conditions await Eastern Cape residents, with isolated showers and rain. Scattered showers and thundershowers are expected in the east.

Eastern Cape (eastern half):

The day will be cloudy and cool to cold with scattered showers and rain, although widespread along the coast.

KwaZulu-Natal:

Residents of KwaZulu-Natal can expect cloudy and cool to cold weather with widespread showers and thundershowers. Light snow is possible in the south-western high grounds.
