Weather alert: Disruptive rainfall and damaging wind expected in NW, EC and KZN

The South African Weather Service (Saws) has released its latest weather forecast for Saturday, 5 April 2025.

Saws warns of disruptive rainfall leading to localised flooding in parts of North West, Eastern Cape and KwaZulu-Natal, as well as damaging wind in parts of the Eastern Cape and KwaZulu-Natal. Fire danger conditions are also expected in the Northern Cape. Here’s what you need to know.

Weather warnings, Saturday, 5 April

Impact-based warnings

The weather service has issued a yellow level 1 warning for disruptive rainfall leading to localised flooding of susceptible formal and informal settlements or roads, low-lying areas and bridges over the eastern parts of North West. Increased travel times are expected on major roads, although they can still be used.

A yellow level 2 warning has been issued for disruptive rain leading to localised flooding of settlements, roads and bridges in places between Port Alfred in the Eastern Cape and Port Edward and the adjacent interior in KwaZulu-Natal.

A yellow level 1 warning has also been issued for damaging wind resulting in localised disruption to ports and harbours, and difficulty in navigation at sea is expected in places between Mazeppa Bay in the Eastern Cape and Port Edward in KwaZulu-Natal.

Fire danger warnings

Extremely high fire danger conditions are expected in the Kannaland Municipality in the Western Cape.

Advisories

Hot to very hot and uncomfortable conditions are expected over the interior of Namakwa, City of Cape Town, West Coast and Cape Winelands Districts until Sunday.

Heatwave conditions are expected over Saldanha Bay, Swartland and parts of the City of Cape Town municipality until Sunday.

Provincial weather forecast

Here’s what to expect in your province on Saturday, 5 April:

Gauteng:

Residents of Gauteng can expect cloudy and cool with scattered showers and rain.

Mpumalanga:

Mpumalanga residents will wake up to morning fog patches and light rain along the escarpment, otherwise it will be cloudy and cool with scattered showers and thundershowers, but isolated in the north-east. It will be warm on the Lowveld.

Limpopo:

The day will start off with morning fog patches and light rain along the escarpment, otherwise conditions will be cloudy and cool to warm with isolated showers and thundershowers in the south. It will become partly cloudy in the north by the afternoon.

North West:

Cloudy and cool conditions await North West residents, with isolated to scattered showers and thundershowers.

Free State:

Residents of the Free State will experience cloudy and cool weather with isolated showers and thundershowers, but scattered in the far eastern parts.

Northern Cape:

The day will start with morning fog along the coast, otherwise it will be partly cloudy, cool to warm but hot in places with isolated showers and thundershowers, except over the central and southern parts.

Western Cape:

Western Cape residents can expect morning fog along the west and south coast becoming partly cloudy and warm to hot, but very hot, in places along the west coast.

The region’s expected UVB sunburn index is “very high”.

Residents should take the necessary precautions against prolonged sun exposure.

Eastern Cape (western half):

Morning fog awaits Eastern Cape residents in places, otherwise it will be partly cloudy and cool to warm with isolated showers and thundershowers in the east.

Eastern Cape (eastern half):

The day will start with morning fog in places, otherwise it will be cloudy and cool with scattered showers and thundershowers but widespread along the coast and adjacent interior.

KwaZulu-Natal:

Residents of KwaZulu-Natal can expect morning fog in places over the interior, otherwise it will be cloudy and cool with scattered showers and thundershowers.
