Level 2 warning for damaging winds in parts of Western Cape

This will lead to very rough and choppy seas, warned the weather service.


The South African Weather Service (SAWS) has issued a level 2 warning for wind and waves between Table Bay and Port Edward on Thursday.

“Strong north to north-westerly winds are possible between Table Bay and Cape Agulhas at first, otherwise west to south-westerly winds, reaching gale force between Cape Point and Plettenberg Bay through Thursday,” warned the weather service.

“Along with the strong winds, wave heights of about 3.5 – 4.5 m are expected. This will lead to very rough and choppy seas.”

Extremely high fire danger conditions are also expected over the Beaufort West Municipality of the Western Cape, interior of Eastern Cape, eastern part of the Northern Cape, western Free State, as well as the central interior of the North-West Province.

Thursday’s weather forecast

Gauteng: Fine and warm weather. The expected UVB sunburn index: very high.

Mpumalanga: Fine and cool to warm weather.

Limpopo: Fine and warm weather.

North West: Fine and warm becoming partly cloudy in the west.

Free State: Fine and cool to warm becoming partly cloudy in the west with isolated showers and thundershowers by the afternoon.

Northern Cape: Partly cloudy, windy, and cool to warm with isolated showers and thundershowers in the east otherwise cloudy and cool with isolated rain and showers over the southern parts where it will be cold in places. The wind along the coast will be moderate to fresh north-westerly to westerly.

Western Cape: Cloudy and cool with isolated to scattered showers and rain, but widespread over the extreme south-west, where it will be cold in places.

The wind along the coast will be light to moderate westerly along the south coast in the morning, otherwise fresh to strong north to north-westerly, reaching near-gale between Table Bay and Cape Agulhas until the afternoon. It will become south to south-westerly by the evening. The expected UVB sunburn index: Moderate.

Western half of the Eastern Cape: Partly cloudy and cool to warm with isolated showers and thundershowers, except in the west. Isolated showers and rain can be expected along the coast. The wind along the coast will be moderate to fresh south-westerly, becoming strong in the afternoon.

Eastern half of the Eastern Cape: Fine and warm weather, becoming partly cloudy with isolated showers and thundershowers, except in the extreme east. The wind along the coast will be fresh north-easterly, becoming moderate to fresh south-westerly by the afternoon, reaching strong south of Wavecrest spreading to the Wild coast in the evening.

KwaZulu-Natal: Morning fog over the northern interior, otherwise fine and warm but hot in places in the east. The wind along the coast will be moderate to fresh in the north-easterly becoming fresh to strong south-westerly in the south in the evening. The expected UVB sunburn index: Extreme.
