The storm that flooded areas of Mbombela in Mpumalanga on Friday was confirmed by provincial disaster management as a tornado that struck the city, reports the Lowvelder.

Roads with blocked gutters caused flooding in certain areas around the city.  The tornado was  about seven kilometres out of the city and moved in a northwesterly direction. No reports of hail or damage to roofs had been identified by late Friday evening.

Several motorists were stuck in traffic due to the heavy downpour of rain.
