Thunderstorms expected in Gauteng on Thursday afternoon

While the winter season edging closer to its end, the South African Weather Service (SAWS) confirmed that thunderstorms were expected in some part of the province on Thursday afternoon, 27 August.

SAWS forecaster Kgolofelo Mahlangu told The Citizen that Gauteng would experience a tiny drop in temperature on the day while the warm weather persists throughout the week.

However, she added that Gauteng would see slightly warmer temperatures from Friday despite the expected thunderstorms the day before.

In contrast, Mahlangu said a weak cold front was set to hit the Southern Western Cape on Tuesday, which will result in rainfall, spreading along the south coast and to the Eastern Cape on Wednesday.

A strong cold front is also expected in the Western Cape and Northern Cape on Friday.

According to Storm Report SA, light snowfall is expected over the southern Drakensberg and Lesotho tomorrow.

Most of the snowfall, “very light in nature”, is expected from Friday as well.

The low temperatures will start on Wednesday, said the SAWS, with Mpumalanga expected to become cloudy by the evening with drizzle and fog patches along the escarpment.

Limpopo and Free State are expected to experience cloudy weather by the evening, with fog patches along the escarpment expected in Limpopo.

“Isolated showers are expected in the far east by evening,” said the SAWS of the Free State.

The Northern Cape will be “cloudy in west and south-west with morning fog along the coast, otherwise fine and cold to cool but warm in the north-east where it will become partly cloudy. It will become cloudy along the coast in the evening.”

The Western Cape will experience fine weather over the extreme south-western parts, otherwise cloudy and cool
to cold with morning fog along the west-coast and adjacent interior and isolated showers over the eastern interior at first.

The western half of the Eastern Cape will experience cloudy and cold weather, with light morning rain in places, but scattered showers and rain along the coast in the morning, while the eastern half will experience cloudy and cold weather, with light rain south of the escarpment, but scattered afternoon showers and rain in the north-east. Snowfalls is also possible over the Drakensberg mountains.

KwaZulu-Natal weather will be fine at first, otherwise partly cloudy and cold to cool but warm in places in the north. Isolated showers are expected, said the SAWS.
