We will always miss you, my friend, says heartbroken Malema

EFF leader Julius Malema was left heartbroken at the news of former ANC Youth League (ANCYL) secretary-general Sindiso Magaqa, who died on Monday.

Magaqa was a councillor at Umzimkhulu in southern KZN. He was rushed to hospital on July 13 after he was shot and wounded along with two other ANC councillors in what is thought to be an ambush by unknown people.

He had been in hospital before succumbing to the gunshot wounds.

The 35-year-old was the secretary-general of the ANCYL before it was disbanded in 2012 after its leadership, under then league president Julius Malema, was found guilty of bringing the ANC into disrepute.

Malema and the ANCYL’s former spokesperson, Floyd Shivambu, were expelled from the ANC, while Magaqa was suspended from the party.

The EFF leader took to social media on Monday evening to express his heartbreak at the death of his “friend”.

“My brother and friend is no more, may his soul Rest In Peace. We will always miss you fearless economic freedom fighter,” he wrote, along with a picture of him with Mgaqa and Shivambu dancing on stage back in their youth league days.

His party’s national spokesperson, Dr Mbuyiseni Ndlozi, also expressed his heartbreak at the news.

“Shame on you death! That you unleash your wreath simply because those you kill hold a different political view. Shame on you! ” he wrote, while Shivambu wrote: “Condolences to the family of Cde Sindiso Magaqa. It’s sad that his life was ended, most possibly, on the instruction of ‘fellow comrades’.”

The EFF also released a statement of condolences to Magaqa’s family.

“The EFF takes this opportunity to call for an end to all political assassinations and killings. Political differences should never degenerate into violence because such will lead to common ruin. The EFF will continue to foster an environment for peaceful political engagement like has been the case since the formation of the organisation in 2013.

“We send condolences to his family, friends and comrades,” it said.
