We already know who will be president, it’s a done deal, says Zwane

“We already know who will be president – it’s a done deal. We are not stressing. The policies won’t change. In January, there will new leadership, and policies will remain the same‚” Zwane has been quoted as saying by TimesLIVE.

He reportedly made the remarks at a gala dinner in Johannesburg on Tuesday night at The Joburg Indaba.

Zwane, largely regarded a supporter of President Jacob Zuma, apparently said the matter surrounding the ANC presidency had already been decided at branch level around the country and the result was already known within the party.

There are seven candidates vying to replace Zuma as the governing party’s next leader when the ANC heads to its critical 54th national conference due to take place from December 16 – 20 in Gauteng.

Deputy President Cyril Ramaphosa and former African Union chairperson Nkosazana Dlamini-Zuma have so far been seen as the frontrunners in the race to lead Africa’s oldest liberation movement amid corruption and state capture allegations that have created turmoil in the ANC.

Zuma has endorsed Dlamini-Zuma as his successor and disputed the notion that the deputy president should, according to ANC tradition, take over party reins from the current president.

However, ANC treasurer-general Zweli Mkhize has entered the leadership race recently, and has been widely seen as a possible compromise candidate towards the December congress.
