WATCH: What exactly is Gwede doing here behind Lekota’s back?

A video has been doing the rounds of ANC chairperson Gwede Mantashe pointing amusedly at Cope leader Mosiuoa Lekota and sticking out his tongue.

In the clip, Lekota can be seen complaining that the ANC has not changed its stripes since the resignation of Jacob Zuma as president.

Mantashe and Lekota were once on the same side of the political divide, with the ANC in alliance with Cosatu. After Mantashe offered his support to Jacob Zuma ahead of the ANC’s Polokwane elective conference, which then decided to recall then president Thabo Mbeki in 2008, Lekota – a former premier – left the ANC in disgust and formed the Congress of the People (Cope).

Cope was initially very successful and garnered more than 7% of the vote in 2009, equalling 30 seats in the National Assembly. By 2014, however, they had slipped to a mere three seats.

Lekota has remained one of the ruling party’s most outspoken and vociferous critics. He has recently expressed his disapproval of the ANC’s policy of land expropriation without compensation.

Mantashe has changed his political stripes considerably since 2007, having been at the forefront of demands from the ANC’s national executive committee that Zuma be recalled before ending his presidential term.
