Two people from Moreleta Park in Pretoria had a less than appetising lunch on Tuesday, Pretoria East Rekord reports.
Heinrich and Megan du Preez were halfway through a meal when disaster struck. They were at the Checkers Village in Moreleta Park.
Heinrich said he first eyed a precooked chicken, but then saw a big fly and opted for the precooked eisbein instead.
“We ate half of it already. When I got to the bone, I found an entire colony of maggots.”
Apparently this was their second experience of this kind. Disgusted, they went back to Checkers.
“The management initially only apologised without any promise of a refund.”
Megan said she posted a video of the maggots on social media.

“It has gone viral, with many people viewing and sharing the video.”
Megan said: “It was never our intention to get any personal gain or financial benefit from this. We just wanted people to be aware of this.”
Checkers head office responded swiftly after seeing the comments on social media.
“The Checkers CEO contacted us directly to apologise. Yesterday, he flew from Cape Town to meet us at the Checkers, and we met at the Checkers with management on Wednesday. They are busy training all staff in food hygiene, said Megan.”
Spokesperson of Checkers Sarita van Wyk said Checkers had a zero-tolerance policy on delivering quality service and products.
“We strive to offer the highest standard, and in this instance we have let our customers and ourselves down therefore an urgent corrective action had been taken,” Van Wyk said.
“We want to assure our customers that additional housekeeping measures have already been put in place overnight to prevent a recurrence and to ensure that our stringent food safety procedures are adhered to.”
Megan posted afterwards on social media that this particular Checkers branch would be under scrutiny for the next six months.
“We urge everyone to report issues to head office directly, as they cannot follow up unless they are aware of it,” she said.
