A fishing trip quickly went pear-shaped for holidaymaker Johan du Plessis when his Land Rover got stuck in the sand and was washed away by the tide at the popular Casuarinas fishing spot in Richards Bay on Friday afternoon, the Zululand Observer reports.
Recovery efforts led to further disaster when a TLB brought in to retrieve his vehicle also became trapped.
Du Plessis, who owns a holiday home in Richards Bay, had been in the area for a week to catch up on some fishing and was unaware of the unstable terrain he was travelling on.
“I was driving along the sand and it was completely dry, but then the tide came in I suddenly found myself trapped in the clay underneath the sand.”
Both the Land Rover and TLB were recovered late on Saturday night
“With the tide coming in and out, my vehicle was washed further away, and efforts to pull it out continued until late Saturday evening when it was finally recovered,” said Du Plessis.
The TLB remained stuck, however, and efforts to recover it continued on Sunday.
“My spare wheel was stolen off the vehicle on Friday night.”
“I would also advise authorities to erect warning signs, as it is a dangerous area, and the soil is unstable. It appears firm, but there is clay underneath, and it is easy to get stuck.”
