The Plus-Size Black Diamonds parties and big black women (BBW) pool parties are the brainchildren of 29-year-old makeup artist and skin care consultant Neo Nene Maboya who created the brand and related events with the aim of “encouraging a fat girl by reminding her she matters”.
Having been plus-size from a young age, Maboya harnessed her outspoken nature and began to work as an activist. She began doing community service and later decided to fight body-shaming around her community.
According to her blog, her brand’s vision is “to fight and make the universe accept fat people as normal human beings”.
“The mission was to create a brand and gather plus-size women together and fight against this body-shaming,” added Maboya.
She began by managing 10 models under her brand and has since ventured into the events space with the parties which she says “help boost confidence and self-love in one’s life”.
The Soweto native also plans to take this work to schools through her #NoBodyShame initiative.
