It was an awkward moment when ANC spokesperson Zizi Kodwa opened a press briefing on economic transformation commission report-back by addressing fake news he said was tweeted by reporter Qaanita Hunter.
In a series of tweets, Hunter opened the lid on a scuffle which was taking place a stone throw away from the media lounge where journalists were preoccupied with when the main address by newly elected president Cyril Ramaphosa.
Unbeknownst to reporters, one of the items which was causing delay to the conclusion of the conference was a tussle taking place during the discussion on land expropriation and the nationalisation of the Reserve Bank.
The stern dressing-down by Kodwa to Hunter prompted another reporter who took to the mic, despite Kodwa giving the opportunity to pose a question to Ferial Haffajee, to protest about Kodwa “getting personal” with Hunter’s tweets.
Haffajee pressed the issue and asked chairperson of the commission Enoch Godongwana, who was chairing it for the last time, whether if there was no physical fight between the delegates whether the debate descended into chaos.
Godongwana frankly admitted to the media contingent here at Nasrec that tempers flared and ANC chairperson Gwede Mantashe had to step in to diffuse the situation in order to prevent the conference from “collapsing”.
