WATCH: Like Nkoana-Mashabane, Ugandan MPs also sleep in parliament

Ugandan and South African MPs: same WhatsApp group.

If you thought International Relations and Cooperation Minister Maite Nkoana-Mashabane was the only MP who slept during parliament proceedings, you were wrong.

In a video that has recently emerged on social media, a funny but rude journalist mentions names of MPs in parliament and says they are “in another world dozing the evening away” as the camera moves to show the said MPs sleeping.

Another politician, presumably from the opposition, then says: “Had the president not been the one delivering the speech, he would be sleeping too.”

The journalist, seemingly disappointed, says all these MPs are trusted by the president to implement his vision for the country.

“It is really an unfortunate situation,” says another politician.

“The same sleeping group is the one that the president enjoys working with. They’re all tired, right from the president and the vice-president. Those are grandfathers who should, for the few hours they’re awake, be playing with their grandchildren,” he adds.

The journalist further mentions other MPs and says they “have joined the party”, saying the “strange incident” probably only happens in Uganda.

In South Africa, we have our very own Nkoana-Mashabane, who is not so lucky, as the EFF makes sure to keep MPs on their toes. In an old video, EFF national spokesperson Mbuyiseni Ndlozi leaves the minister embarrassed after exposing her sleeping tendencies in parliament.

Ndlozi says he is worried because the minister is being paid a lot of money to serve the country. His other concern is that the position in which she is sleeping looks as if she could fall off her chair.

“We pay you, don’t sleep here. He banna!” said Ndlozi.
