A video shared on the Economic Freedom Fighters Twitter account on Wednesday showed a number of party members piling processed meat products into trolleys at a Shoprite supermarket in Kokstad.
The EFF had earlier claimed that Pick n Pay had responded with arrogance to their call to remove all listeriosis-tainted products‚ and called on the public to visit its outlets and “help” them remove such items.
EFF spokesman Mbuyiseni Ndlozi also said the action should be extended to “Shoprite‚ Woolworths and others”.
In a press release this week, Shoprite said their house brand and private label cold meats sold under the Housebrand, Ritebrand and Farmer’s Deli brand names were not affected by recall notices that had been served on Enterprise Foods and Rainbow Chicken, the Bosveld Review reported.
“Shoprite and Checkers own brands in this category are not manufactured by these two suppliers,” their press statement reads.
Supermarkets in the Shoprite Group on Monday had reportedly already removed all affected Enterprise processed cold meats and Rainbow Chicken polony from its fridges and delis after the announcement by the Minister of Health Aaron Motsoaledi, following tests linking the Listeria monocytogenes ST6 strain positively with these supplier manufacturing plants.
“The products have been removed from shelves, isolated in stores, and are being uplifted as of this morning,” the statement read.
It’s therefore not clear whether these EFF fighters are in fact removing affected products.
