An assault that took place at Shoprite in Riverwalk Centre, Potchefstroom, has shocked the community.

A video of the incident was uploaded to Facebook yesterday, which shows a manager assaulting a merchandiser in what seems to be a storage area, Potchefstroom Herald reports.

According to the Facebook post, the employee was assaulted because he was wearing a beanie on his head. The video shows how the manager manhandles the employee, shoves him and slaps him on his head. He also threw his beanie on the floor and grabbed his sunglasses.

A case of assault was opened at the police on May 15.

Shoprite Holdings responded to the incident on May 24, saying they strongly disapprove of the conduct visible in the video, and will not allow any member of management or staff to behave inappropriately.

“The incident was immediately investigated at an executive level and a disciplinary process is being followed,” Shoprite said.

They also explained they were aware of their responsibility towards all members of their staff, which includes merchandisers and contract workers from other service providers, to provide a professional working environment.

“Any coaching or reprimanding needs to be done with employees’ right to dignity and respect in mind, and in line with company policy,” Shoprite said.

They concluded that the appropriate action will be taken in accordance with the law and the company’s Code of Conduct, which applies to all management and staff.
