Deputy president of the EFF Floyd Shivambu has come out to condemn the ANC for rejecting the EFF’s offer to have the constitution amended to allow for the expropriation of land without expropriation.
The ANC rejected EFF leader Julius Malema’s 6% offer of his party national vote, which would enable the ANC to amend section 25 of the constitution which prohibits expropriation of land without compensation.
While addressing parliament on Tuesday afternoon, Malema said: “Today the ANC should come with the EFF. There’s 6% available … we give it to you with the condition to amend the constitution and take the land,” adding that “If you don’t agree with us today, it means you don’t agree with your outgoing president [Jacob Zuma] on the issue of land expropriation without compensation.”
Zuma said last month that he wanted the law changed to allow for expropriation without government having to pay a cent.
However, ANC member of parliament Phumuzile Ngwenya-Mabila responded to Malema immediately, saying: “We disagree with the motion tabled by honourable [Floyd] Shivambu. We totally reject it! That we amend section 25, subsection 1 … in fact it’s subsection 2 of the constitution,” adding that “expropriation must be subjected to just and equitable compensation as indicated in section 25 subsection 2 (b) of the constitution. The amount of which and the time and manner of payment of which have been agreed to by those affected or decided or approved by the court.”
Shivambu said that it’s “stupid” for the ANC to argue that the motion to amend the constitution for expropriation without compensation is unconstitutional. He said the fight for the land would continue.
“It is patently stupid of the ANC to argue that a motion to change the constitution for expropriation without compensation is unconstitutional!
“Good Morning South Africa! The War for our land continues. We might have lost a battle, but the War is on and we shall overcome!”
Malema also tweeted: “Freedom is still coming, this land belongs to our ancestors. The ruling elite is ruling in the best interest of apartheid beneficiaries.”
