Speaking a few hours before the official opening of the ANC policy conference held at Nasrec just outside Soweto this morning, Social Development Minister and ANC Women’s League president Bathabile Dlamini says they will be demanding a bigger budget for Commission for Gender Equality (CGE).

She told public broadcaster SABC the league did not only demand that the country have a woman president, but she must also be given an opportunity, as she was on “Steve Biko’s team”.

Without mentioning Dr Nkosazana Dlamini-Zuma by name, Dlamini said the former AU commission chairperson was a leader who had earned her stripes and would make a good leader.

The former convicted fraudster, who has had her fair share of controversy, particularly the Sassa grant payment tender illegally awarded to CPS, said the league would tell the policy conference that they demand a full ministry responsible for women’s affairs.

“Monitoring and evaluation and other departments in the Presidency are not doing much for women, and we understand that all other Chapter 9 institutions are important. We will be asking for money for CGE with more powers, as they can’t do much with the current budget they have.”

She said despite the land having being “stolen” before 1913, league members would make submissions that land redistribution be restricted to that period, when the infamous Land Act was passed.
