Former ANC MP Vytjie Mentor has on Friday apologised to her Facebook followers for claiming Zimbabwe President Robert Mugabe was better than President Jacob Zuma.
She said it was wrong of her as a leader to make such a statement, saying the two presidents were the same.
“As a leader I must know to admit it when wrong and to apologise. My earlier Status that claimed Mugabe is better than Zuma was WRONG!I apologize unreservedly! They are the same,” she wrote.
Though most accepted her apology, some said there was no need for her to apologise, as she was apparently right.
“Much as I accept your apology, but it’s important to note the context under which you made the comparison!Mugabe is the better devil because he has no sold the fundamental fibre of what constitutes Zimbabwe which is their sovereignty unfortunately you can’t say the same with baba aka-no1!believe me his devisiveness is going to plunge the country into civil war,” said one of her followers.
Mentor on Thursday sparked a debate on Facebook on who the better president was between Mugabe and our very own Zuma.
“Mugabe is way better than Zuma in one aspect only. Yes! He is! He protected Zimbabwe’s sovereignty throughout and under all circumstances,” Mentor wrote.
Political leaders, including some in ruling party ANC, have criticised Zuma for his alliance with the controversial Gupta brothers, who have been accused of offering ministerial positions to Police Minister Fikile Mbalula and former deputy finance minister Mcebisi Jonas, among many others.
Sipho Pityana, ANC stalwart and chairperson of the AngloGold Ashanti board, who has long been calling for Zuma to go, has previously taken on the president for allowing black ownership of the economy to shrink under his watch.
“It is yet another one of Zuma’s dismal failures, and he must stop trying to fool South Africans into thinking he has anything else at heart than his own enrichment and the enrichment of his cronies.
“As was clearly shown in the recent public protector’s report, State of Capture, Zuma not only stands at the centre of the Guptas’ economic empire, he actively facilitates it,” Pityana, convener of the Save South Africa campaign, was quoted as saying.
