VIDEO: Protesters loot grocery truck on N2 in KZN

The community of Mfekayi, between Mtubatuba and Hluhluwe, in KwaZulu-Natal, took to the N2 this morning, blocking the national road, looting a truck and setting one alight, Zululand Observer reports.

KwaMsane SAPS and traffic officials are currently on scene attending to the matter.

According to police, the N2 between Mtubatuba and Hluhluwe is open to motorists, but traffic is backed up, and people are being urged to proceed with caution.

KwaMsane police spokesperson Captain Jabulani Mdletshe said trucks along the N2 near the Mfekayi Reserve area had pulled off the road.

“At the moment things have come to a standstill, protesters ordered truck drivers to dump coal and manure on the N2, which is blocking parts of the road.

“Protest action started at about 5am where two trucks were set alight, one burnt beyond recognition and two looted.

“Mtuba Fire and Rescue are on the scene attending to the burnt trucks.

“Traffic police are attempting to alleviate congestion together with KwaMsane and Mtuba police, who are on scene,” Mdletshe said.

The community are reportedly up in arms over the lack of service delivery.

They are demanding RDP housing, water and a police station.

This follows a community march last week in which a memorandum was handed over to the mayor of Mtubatuba, Velangenkosi Gumede.

Members of the public are being advised to delay their trips up north, as there are no alternative routes available.
