South African Federation of Trade Unions (Saftu) general secretary Zwelinzima Vavi and National Union of Metalworkers of South Africa (Numsa) general secretary Irvin Jim arrived to a rousing welcome at the federation’s report back rally in Rustenburg in the North West on Sunday.
“Asinavalo… [We are not scared in what we do]”, union members sang as the two entered the Ben Marais Hall, with Numsa members leading the audience in song.
The new trade union federation was formed following the expulsion of Vavi and Numsa from the Congress of South African Trade Unions (Cosatu) in November 2015. The Food and Allied Workers’ Union also left Cosatu and subsequently joined Saftu.
