UPDATE: Plenty of mystery, little certainty surrounds Elliot Moyo’s ‘death’

Elliot Moyo, the man at the centre of the resurrection drama that made headlines earlier this year, has reportedly been confirmed dead by his family.

However, mystery still surrounds the alleged death of Moyo, with The Star reporting that family members who claim he died on April 3 in Zimbabwe have also said that his real name was, in fact, Thabiso Proud Mlanje.

Stanley Mlanje told Zimbabwean publication B-Metro that his older brother was the man who appeared in the resurrection video, adding that he had arrived in Zimbabwe too ill to talk, dying shortly afterwards.

According to Mlanje, Moyo/Mlanje was buried in Dandanda village in Lupane, Zimbabwe.

Emily Moyo – another family member B-Metro says was the deceased’s grandmother, said he was vomiting blood at the time of his death.

Why Moyo was known by two different names and why some of his family members are known as Moyo and some aren’t, is not made clear in The Star’s story.

Daily Sun, meanwhile, reported on Facebook that Moyo’s death was confirmed by his family, two weeks after rumours of his death first started doing the rounds.

Several Zimbabwean news publications reported last Monday that Brighton Elliot Moyo had passed on following a short illness.

According to Malawi24, iHarare.com, ZwNews.com, Bulawayo24 News, and Zimbabwe News, to name a few, Elliot died last week.

Adding more mystery, these publications said Moyo had died in South Africa and was buried on Saturday, conflicting with what his alleged family members told The Star about him arriving back in Zimbabwe.

The South African Police Services (Saps) also told The Star they were unaware of his death.

He is reportedly survived by his wife, who The Zimbabwe Mail claims told them Moyo was afraid of the Saps, to the point that he would sneak out of hospital in a bid to avoid them.

The Citizen will attempt to gain more information on what transpired and will publish our findings once a clearer picture emerges.
