The partly decomposed bodies of two African males were found inside a cave near Vlakplaas, Scherberg, west of Pretoria, on Monday morning.
They were, however, only retrieved on Tuesday afternoon by members of the police’s rescue unit.
Police spokesperson Captain Augustinah Selepe said the property owner informed the police on Monday that they had spotted the two bodies inside the cave. They immediately reported it to the police.
“All necessary role players were assembled, including the search and rescue team of the police, but due to darkness and unforeseen circumstances the search was called off on Monday,” Selepe said.
She said the police went back to the scene on Tuesday morning and the bodies were recovered after a 24-hour operation.
“Last week the property owners called the police and reported there were people trespassing on their farm. The police went to inspect and arrest the trespassers, and one fled the scene.
“On Monday the property owners were inspecting the farm and went to the cave, where they spotted the bodies,” said Selepe.
She said the police opened an inquest docket to determine the cause of the deaths, and investigations would hopefully also shed light on where the men were killed.
Meanwhile, the police said allegations that the two deceased were ZCC members could not be confirmed until such time that they were identified.
Selepe said there was no indication there might be more bodies inside the cave.
Selepe said anyone who may have information that could assist with the identification of the deceased, or help establish the circumstances leading up to their deaths, is being urged to come forward and report to the police on 08600 10111 or to their nearest police station.
