An eight-year-old boy and a three-year-old girl were killed and three other people were injured when two cars collided on the corner of Atlas and Bass roads in Kempton Park, Ekurhuleni late on Saturday night, paramedics said.
When ER24 paramedics arrived on the scene at about 11.30pm, another medical service had assessed the two children, but despite their best efforts the children were declared dead on the scene, ER24 spokeswoman Ineke van Huyssteen said.
A car was lying on its side. A woman was found a few metres away from the car. She was assessed and found to be in a serious condition. A man was walking around on the scene and had sustained minor injuries. Emergency services also found a baby of about six months in a baby car seat in the bushes. She had sustained moderate injuries.
Another car was found in a ditch but the driver was uninjured. ER24 transported three patients to Sunshine Hospital. The circumstances surrounding the crash were not yet known to paramedics, but local authorities were on the scene to investigate, Van Huyssteen said.
