‘Tsek Zuma tsotsies!’ – a message from the National Day of Action
The witty placards are once again on full display – so far none of them seems to be racist.
Today’s march against President Jacob Zuma in Pretoria has seen a colourful tapestry of South Africans displaying yet another series of controversial placards.
The march was organised by different political parties, including the Democratic Alliance (DA), the United Democratic Movement (UDM), Inkatha Freedom Party (IFP), African Christian Democratic Party (ACDP), the Congress of the People (Cope), the Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF) and the African People’s Convention (APC).
They want the president to step down from the presidential office.
“Tsek Zuma tsotsies!” was one such placard displayed during the march, with another saying: “ANC is a shack to hide criminals.”
Many other scathing placards were displayed during the march.
The president had earlier this week complained that some “white compatriots” displayed racism in their posters during the People’s March last week, despite any evidence for such racism.
Zuma, who turns 75 today, said his birthday wish was to see victory against racism and inequality. He said through the presidency there needed to be progress in black economic empowerment so that the country could achieve “true economic freedom”.
“I would like to see us making more progress in fighting poverty and inequality. We need to make progress in black economic empowerment to promote true economic freedom. I also wish to see us winning the battle against racism in our country.
“We remain committed to building a nonracial society and will continue to work hard to unite our people against racism and all it’s [sic] manifestations. My wish is also to see more citizens working with the police and government to rid our communities of crime and building safer communities.
“Working together we will find solutions,” Zuma told the presidency.
