Trouble in the water for Ramaphosa in KZN – report
Following his ascendancy to the ANC presidency, Ramaphosa may already be facing one of his biggest challenges.
Cyril Ramaphosa’s successful bid to become the ANC president was arguably possible with some help from ally Senzo Mchunu, but Ramaphosa’s supporters in KwaZulu-Natal feel he has not done enough to fight for Mchunu after losing the position of ANC secretary-general to Free State Premier Ace Magashule, City Press reports.
Mchunu lost by only 16 votes to Magashule at the ANC’s 54th national elective conference, which has led to calls for a recount and threats of legal action from the side that supports Mchunu, mostly from the KZN branches.
Also among their grievances is that Gauteng dominated the ANC top six, with no representation from KZN, the province with the biggest delegation.
The alliance between Ramaphosa and Mpumalanga Premier DD Mabuza was already worrying for Ramaphosa’s supporters in KZN, but the events following Mchunu’s defeat are, for some, the last straw.
There are Ramaphosa lobbyist who feel, however, that there is nothing wrong with how Ramaphosa handled the matter.
