Trench dug by protesters causes heavy traffic

Police officers were trying to clean up the road while assisting motorists.

Traffic was severely affected on the busy James Street in Ennerdale, south of Johannesburg, on Tuesday morning.

This after irate protesting residents from the nearby Finetown informal settlement dug a trench on the road that is usually busy during peak hours when residents are en route to their respective places of employment.

It is believed the protest was sparked by the lack of electricity in the area. This is not the first time residents have taken to the streets over various issues of service delivery.

Police officers from the Johannesburg metro were trying to clean up the road while directing traffic. Some of the officers came with spades to fill up the trench with soil so that vehicles could move with more ease.

The area appeared a bit calmer on Tuesday morning but it was still not known if the protesters, who also barricaded the road with rocks and burning tyres on Monday night, would return.
